REGULATIONS CONCERNING SAFETY DEVICES
(clothes and accessories)

According to the EEC directive n. 89/686 and all its following amendments, there are 3 categories of individual safety devices:

  • I cat. - simple devices, used for the protection against slight risks and easy to be detected;
  • II cat. - intermediary devices, all those that don’t belong to I or III categories;
  • III cat. - complex devices, used for the protection against dangerous or mortal risks and difficult to be detected in due time from the worker.

Referring to the safety devices of the first category, in order to put the CE brand it is enough that the manufacturer or the authorized distributor declare the conformity to the technical rules and to the essential safety and sanitary requirements (self-certification).

Referring to the safety devices of the second and third categories, it is necessary that an independent body (certifying and notified European body) issues a CE certificate, as the result of various controls and tests on the product. In this case the CE brand is accompanied by the number that identifies the certifying body (III cat.).

The safety devices belonging to the third category are also subject to further controls on the manufacturer and the production plant (see art. 11 of the Directive). Only for the third category, in order to address the

  • Type 1 - Gas tight clothes EN 943
  • Type 2 - Non-gas tight clothes EN 943
  • Type 3 - Protection against liquid splashes EN 14605
  • Type 4 - Protection against sprays EN 14605
  • Type 5 - Protection against solid particles EN ISO 13982-1
  • Type 6 - Protection against slight splashes EN 13034
